The sound of music
Who would think a world-class choir could be put together by children from the most disadvantaged communities? The Nalandaway Choir project is proof that it can be. Initiated first across Chennai (2015) and then Delhi (2018), this project taps into the transformative powers of music to help children emerge as more confident, hopeful and skillful. Both the Chennai Children’s Choir & Delhi Children’s Choir have performed widely, alongside many celebrated musicians and across well-known venues.
From neurotypical children to those who are physically challenged, the two choirs represent a thriving world of enthusiastic & aspiring singers. Since the first year of inception of this programme, the Nalandaway music team has auditioned across hundreds of Government and trust run schools to find talent. A deep sense of community and regard for various cultures, has been a natural outcome.

chennai children’s choir highlights
- Performed at the Serenade Choral Festival at the Kennedy Center, Washington DC (2018)
- Performed alongside the renowned Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna at the Sri Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall (2019)
- Performed “Vaishnava Jana Toh” for Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, later released by the MIT-funded performing arts company IndianRaga (2020)
- Performed for the ‘I for India’ concert to raise funds for Covid-19 on-ground relief efforts (2020)
